Decoration for Officers in Gold of the 1st version, as a seven-pointed star, its rays flanked by stylized palmettes (or tips of laurel leaves); centre medallion with the laureated head of Don Joao VI King of Portugal facing right, within border with embossed inscription “VOLUNTARIOS REAES DEL REY”, the whole enclosed within a border of embossed oak leaves; strong upper loop, round, grooved ring and pivoting, horizontal suspension bar; the reverse with broad centre medallion bearing the inscription “MONTEDIVEO” within three rosettes above and acanthus leaves below, the whole within a border of embossed oak leaves.
An historically important and very rare decoration, instituted in 1824, to reward signalled merits and commemorate the fierce combats during the overseas’ expeditions of 1816 to 1820, excellent condition.
