A Complete Collar of the Order, of the Civil Division, instituted in 1815: neck chain in Silver gilt, maker’s mark “JJE - John James Edington”, chiseled silver made of 24 links; 12 rampant lions; 6 “Gr” monograms; 6 Hannover crowns; all parts, linked by chains with double rings, with the suspension for the collar badge; this, in gold, unreadable British hallmark (n, ?), approx. 50 grams, both central medallions gold, enameled (minor crack in the green enamel), original suspension ring. Splendid and highly rare badge in almost perfect condition. An outstandingly rare set before 1837 of highest jeweler’s quality!
The Guelphic Order was founded in 1815 by George, Prince Regent, later King George IV and awarded both to British and Hanoverians (and foreign dignitaries) being Hanover under the common rule of the British Sovereign. At the death of George IV, the order was awarded by the King of Hanover from 1837. The order, as a state award ceased its existence when the Kingdom of Hanover was taken by Prussia as a consequence of the 1866 war.
