Military Order of the Tower and Sword

Commander's Cross. Neck Badge, 51x40 mm., as a white enameled 5-pointed star pointing downwards with ball-finials, flanked by green enameled oak wreath, centre medallion in gold, bearing the symbols of military merit as a sword passing through a green enameled laurel wreath within blue enameled outer circlet bearing the Order’s motto “VALOR LEALDADE MERITO” in golden lettering, reverse centre medallion bearing Portugal’s coat of arms on enameled “open book” within blue enameled outer circlet bearing “PELO REI E PELA LEI”, upper, stylized tower with chiseled details, fitted with round suspension ring, with original neck ribbon. A particularly fine badge, dating to the mid 19th Century, very rare and excellent condition. I RR!
