Oval, silver medallion, completely set with brilliant-cut pastes forming beams, surmounted by branches, also set with white pastes, flanking a stylized Persian crown and a centre red paste; below, a tied bow set with pastes of different size; in the centre, an oval miniature portrait of Emperor Nasr al-Din Shah Qajar (1831 – 1896), in uniform and feathered cap, within a thin, gold frame; gilt reverse, with hinged cover to the capsule containing the portrait, and flat suspension loop, this, struck with Austrian silver and control marks and the maker’s one “GA” of Georg Arbinger (active in Vienna between 1877 and 1885). An exceptionally rare piece, most possibly personally ordered by the Shah, during his second visit to Vienna, in July 1878, to be presented to a member of the highest, Austrian nobility.
