RUSSIA

Exceedingly rare and historically important Imperial Eagle pendant, 58x40 m, made of two separately-made elements in gold and white/rose enamels, then joined to form the obverse and reverse sides; the breast, wings and tail, set with precious stones, surrounded by tiny beads of polychrome enamels;the upper crown with a hole where was located the suspension ring. A piece of the finest, ancient Russian craftsmanship, extremely fine condition and minor signs of wear, that can be dated to the early 18th Century. After an ancient tradition also existing in Western Europe’s Renaissance, before the introduction of a “modern” system of awards, the Russian Sovereigns were used to present foreign sovereigns and highest ranking dignitaries, with precious gifts, like jewelled miniature portraits and other gifts that couldremain as a visible sign of the Tsar’s graciousness, like the hereby offered eagle.Tsar Peter I “the Great” initiated an organisation of Russia’s award system, but retained his right to offer special, precious presents; a tradition thatlasted until the end of the Imperial Monarchy. With 13 diamonds for a total of 0.12 ct. I RR!
